Education
Is Broken

If you are frustrated with writing education, it isn't your fault!

Remember in high school when you learned all about how mitochondria is the powerhouse of the cell, but no one ever bothered to teach you how to balance a checkbook? Writing education is pretty much like that: lots of head knowledge you’ll probably never use, with none of the practical knowledge you need. The “good stuff,” the strategies you need to actually finish a book, is unintentionally buried under ages of dogma, writing how-to-books, and academic head knowledge.

The result?

Desperate writers taking overly expensive MFA programs (like me) or wandering around, reading thousands of books on writing craft, all the while feeling like something was just missing for them to achieve their one big goal: finishing their novel.

You're going to need a hell of a lot more than just technique

Most writing programs only teach simple technique and writing "hacks," and then leave you to figure out the hard part.

If all you needed was more information on technique, you could sit down tomorrow and write rainbows and butterflies. You could read seven different books on plot and you could analyze story structure and character design. With your head full of information you could write that book that is aching to come out of you.

But more information isn’t the answer.

In fact, 95% of writers who’ve been writing more than a few months don’t need more information! They need a way to take the story inside of them and get it onto the page.

For that, you’re going to need an entirely different toolkit.

You're a writer.
Aren't you, like, supposed to be writing?

Does this sound familiar?

  • You've scheduled "writing time" on your calendar and you 100% BELIEVE that you are going to write, but it... well, it doesn't *always* seem to happen.
  • You never feel better than when you've written your 1,000 words for the day, but that doesn't happen much.
  • A novel has so radically touched your life that you want to try and write something just 1/10th as good, but you never feel like you are getting closer.
  • You get a special satisfaction from taking an extra three minutes at work to find the perfect word on that email.
  • Your writing for the day might be a scribble of a thought between doing dishes, putting kids to bed, or commuting from work. It counts... right?

You already have a story locked inside of you.

Another YouTube video on plot is not the key.

Imagine how it would feel if you could...

  • Have the rountine and discipline to sit down and write every single day so you can finally make progress on your story.
  • Release yourself from feeling like "you don't have enough time" to get your writing done.
  • Connect, learn, and grow in a diverse and safe community of creative writers.
  • Learn the craft of writing from world-class, bestselling, all-around amazing authors, educators, editors, and agents.
  • Keep yourself accountable to accomplish your writing goals. Day-after-day, year-after-year.

Imagine no more... it's time to tell your story.

HappyWriter has been the perfect mix of resources, encouragement, and inspiration. I love the connections I’ve made, and the trainings and workshops have been phenomenal. Brian and his team go above and beyond in making you feel supported and have the information you need to be successful on your writing journey.

A library of writing education content

Technique is still important, and so HappyWriter has an archive of writing content focused on various parts of the storytelling process.

You don't need to learn more technique.

You need a writing process.

At the core of HappyWriter is the Core Curriculum. This on-demand course is designed to teach you how to build a prolific writing process to supercharge you writing life. A writing process is the key to getting your novel finished in 2021 and beyond. Below are the nine modules of the Core Curriculum.

Core Curriculum Course Overview

The Core Curriculum will be live in December, 2020.

Beliefs dictate what is and isn’t possible. Without strong beliefs, it does not matter how much a writer learns- they will not achieve their goals. In this first module, we set the foundation for a lifetime of learning.

What you will learn:

  • The difference between empowering and limiting beliefs.
  • How beliefs power your entire life.
  • How to set powerful and empowering beliefs about yourself and your writing life.

Setting a powerful writing goal provides focus and energy. In this module, you’ll learn AND set your own writing goals.

What you will learn:

  • The four components of how to set a powerful writing goal
  • The #1 mistake most writers make when setting goals
  • How to set a goal that is aligned with your beliefs

The writing journey is emotionally challenging. Learning how to manage your emotions and energy will allow you to build a consistent writing practice so that you will write good pages each and every day.

What you will learn:

  • How to manage your emotions so that you don’t quit writing
  • How to use energy to take action
  • How to build pro-active plans to manage your emotional writing journey

The absolute core of a writing process is taking action. In this module, you will learn how to build a writing routine, how to manage your time, how to build rituals, and how to ensure you are writing each and every day.

What you will learn:

  • How to build a daily writing routine.
  • How to manage your time to write as much as possible.
  • How writing rituals power your writing life.

To write, you’ll need to learn how to manage the architect, creator, editor, and reader.

What you will learn:

  • The difference between the architect, creator, editor, and reader.
  • When to use each persona during your writing journey.
  • How to easily switch between each persona.
  • How to stay in each persona and not combine the creator with the editor or reader.

The first part of writing a novel is designing it. This is where you’ll learn how to build a plan for your novel before you start drafting.

What you will learn:

  • How to decide between planning, plotting, or pantsing.
  • How to know when you’ve sufficiently designed a novel.
  • The seven core story components and how to use them.

Drafting a novel is when the writer puts words on a page. In this module, we will lean on the “creator” persona to get a first draft finished.

What you will learn:

  • The three secrets to ensure you get your first draft finished.
  • How to compose a first draft without pain.

After your first draft is complete, revising your novel is absolutely critical. In this module, you will learn a complete revision process to ensure you have a clean draft. In this module, we lean on the “editor” persona.

What you will learn:

  • The editing tricks and tips of best-sellers
  • How to know what to keep and what to cut
  • A complete revision process

The home stretch! By this point, you are almost finished with your novel, and you need to use the “reader” persona to iron out the final kinks in your manuscript.

What you will learn:

  • How to review your manuscript as if you were the reader
  • Common pitfalls before publication
  • How to work with freelance editors

Nancy, a HappyWriter

Hi, I'm Brian

I started HappyWriter because I am that guy who spent 50k on an MFA and realized I had 1) met some incredible friends 2) listened to a lot of lectures I wasn’t quite smart enough to understand and 3) still really didn’t know how to be a writer.

Sure, I could put some words on a page, but I wasn’t consistent and I damn sure wasn’t happy. Writing was something I DEEPLY wanted to do, yet it felt so painful and completely and totally impossible.

Don’t ask me how or why, but one day I just made up my mind that it didn’t have to be this way.

I had seen enough people who seemed to have it all: beautiful books, a balanced attitude, a community of writers, and I become obsessed about understand how they pulled it off.

The path was honestly pretty crazy. It involved an MFA from NYU, going through coaching school, pulling out the best lessons from 12+ years as a technology exec, interviewing 70+ bestselling authors on their writing strategies for my podcast, and reading no less than one million books on philosophy, motivation, drive, and performance to understand why we people are the way we are.

The result was worth all of the years and pages.

The result is HappyWriter.

I’m not special, I’m just obsessed with finding the most powerful strategies for my own writing life and sharing them with the world.

Say hello to just some of HappyWriter faculty!

Each month, HappyWriter faculty teach writers writing technique, engage in live coaching calls, and even release pre-recorded online classes. All in the services of helping you get your story onto the page.
